Jazz on the Quay
Saturday 16th June 2018 at the Duver Marina
Saturday's cold wind, which persisted frustratingly throughout the evening, was a bit of a challenge, but happily not one which seemed to deter anyone and over 350 jazz enthusiasts were at the Duver Marina to enjoy the 3rd Jazz on the Quay event, in support of Island charity The Sophie Rolf Trust - KissyPuppy.
The event was kicked off by the wonderful Jim Thorn Quintet with their rich and lyrical rendition of modern jazz classics from the 1940s to 60s. They were followed by salsa and Latin Jazz specialists Toca Bonito, whose 8-piece band actually turned out to be a 12-piece band, creating the most fabulous mix of Afro Caribbean rhythms and jazz horns, irresistible to the many who took to the dance floor - as wonderful to watch the practiced experts as it was great fun to participate (and also a great way to keep warm!).
Our grateful thanks to Sydenhams for the loan of 2 large heaters for the marquee - creating a cosy area to warm up in which was much appreciated by all!
Angel in the Kitchen dished up their legendary traditional Paella, and added a vegetarian/vegan version to cater for all, and the beautifully converted vintage horsebox - the Water Horse Box Bar - was on hand to quench thirsts. On-site Duver Cafe, with new operators Lindsay and Josy, stayed open late serving hot drinks, bacon rolls and homemade cakes - enjoyed by many ...
Nice Ice IOW - a new Island business in their very first day of trading, brought along their beautiful, specially converted vintage bike, with a variety of locally made ice-creams and toppings on offer. Perhaps not the best evening for ice-cream but they were very well received and they'll be back in the Harbour at forthcoming events when hopefully the sun will be out and the temperature up!
Event tickets, sales of Bembridge Harbour Fudge, donations from the food/drink providers at the event and from attending rallies and customers, has added a further £2,151.50 to our fundraising efforts so a massive thank to all!
