Charity Fun Runs in support of the Sophie Rolf Trust & West Wight Sports & Community Centre - part of Isle of Wight Running Festival
The Duver Dash on 30th May was the opening event of this year's Isle of Wight Festival of Running, organised by West Wight Sports & Community Centre. Based at Bembridge Harbour it was co-ordinated by the Harbour Authority. Funds raised are split equally between WWSCC and the Harbour's 2021 nominated charity, the Sophie Rolf Trust - KissyPuppy.
The 5km course, for over 16s, started with a lap of St Helen's Duver, and then took runners along St Helens Beach, up through Nodes Point Holiday Park and across footpaths and fields before heading down into St Helens Village, across the Green, and down Mill Road towards the Harbour, finishing across the Causeway (known as the Mill Wall by locals) and back onto the Duver, offering some spectacular views across the Harbour and surrounding countryside.
The Junior 1km course (under 16s, min age 5) ws held on the St Helens Duver itself, with the option of a 2nd lap being taken up by quite a few of the older children, whilst Mums and Dads ran with some of the younger ones. 5 year-old Max (who took his Mum with him) said "it was described perfectly as it was a run and most definitely fun!"
The warm sunshine and gentle breezes were enjoyed by over 150 runners, some of whom went on to take part in the concluding weekend of the IoW Festival of Running, with the Needles ½ Marathon, 5k and Junior Fun Run on Sunday 6th June.
Well done to all, and grateful thanks to our small army of volunteer Marshals, the West Wight Sports & Community Centre, Harbour Staff, and to the National Trust, Nodes Point Holiday Park and local landowners, without whose kind permissions the course would not have been possible.
